Zing Origami - Human and Humanoid Figures

Starman  2026
Invented at the CoCon 2026 Connection in Chicago. I had been working on my Vertex Centered Dodecahedron and thinking about using a pentagon sheet for some kind of representational subject. A human figure came to mind, since it has five major extremities, and I thought this approach might provide a refreshing alternative to the more typical box-pleated look of many human subjects. I consider the first attempt merely a base. The next step is to sculpt some characters of different kinds. Although you can't see it with this paper, the head has a color change.

Grimmy  2024
Inspired by a famous purple unofficial sportsball team mascot and pop culture sensation.

Wise Alien  2020
An improvement on my Martian from 2017, with a better body, robe and more stable standing base. According legend these wise aliens originate from a planet outside our solar system, but since humans first encountered them on Mars, the name Martian stuck. This model was designed as a companion for my Astronaut, and the eyes use a similar fold as the Astronaut's visor.

Astronaut  2015
Based on a half-remembered box-pleated frog someone showed me once. The base, human or frog, has the limbs in the right place and the box-pleating technique creates limbs that don't taper, as with a traditional base. One nice detail is the spread-squash to form the visor. In focusing on simpler models I've been going back to alot of traditional moves, looking for new ways to use them and finding they can be really expressive.
